Irene Rosa Bulla Olczak, 99 years old and long time resident of Ubly and Holt passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Courtney Manor of Bad Axe. Irene was born on October 7, 1918 in Austin Township to the late John D. and Catherine Gillis Bulla. She graduated from Ubly High School in 1935. She attended the state teachers college in Mount Pleasant. She started teaching in Hogsback, Cumber and Tyre rural schools. She then received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Central Michigan College of Education in Mount Pleasant. Irene taught elementary education for a number of years in Pontiac and then in Lansing. She met and married Stanley J. Olczak on June 20, 1953 in Pontiac and made her home in Holt in 1955. She continued to teach in Lansing until her retirement in her later years. Irene’s lifelong interests included her passion for teaching young children, researching the genealogies of her Scottish and Polish ancestors and spending time with her family. Irene is survived by many nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law, Irene Olczak Dymek and Rosella Olczak. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley and their daughter, Catherine Anne; four brothers, infants Hugh and James Bulla, John C. Bulla and his wife, Clara, Michael Bulla; three sisters, Helen and Josephine Bulla, Florence Sweeney and her husband, Neil D. Mass of Christian burial will be 12 noon Wednesday, February 7 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Good Shepherd Parish in Argyle. Rev. Charles Hammond, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Ignatius Cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 7 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Argyle from 10:00 am until the mass at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, Irene’s family requested masses for the souls of the deceased at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Good Shepherd Parish.
