Mr. Arthur J. Vogel, 88 of Palms, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018 at Courtney Manor Nursing Home in Bad Axe. He was born on April 6, 1929 in Sherman Twp. to the late Adolph and Adella (Messing) Vogel. He married Norma Catherine “Kate” Handley on May 14, 1955 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Port Sanilac. Kate preceded him in death on February 18, 2013. Arthur received his high school diploma at the age of 14. He farmed all his life before retiring in 1991. He was a good carpenter and could build or fix just about anything. He enjoyed listening to polka music and dancing. Arthur truly cherished spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Arthur is survived by four children, Patricia McConnachie of Deckerville, Gary (Linda) Vogel of Palms, Thomas (Mary) Vogel of Palms, Kristine (Dean) Roggenbuck of Ubly; 9 grandchildren, John (Hilary) McConnachie of Whitmore Lake, Mark McConnachie of Deckerville, Joshua (Pamela) Vogel of Faulkton, SD, Derrick (Iza) Vogel of Petoskey, Megan (Mike) Brown of Minden City, Samuel (Jennifer) Vogel of Deckerville, John (Morgan) Wiegert of Marlette, Ryche Roggenbuck and Isle Roggenbuck, both of Ubly; 16 great grandchildren; two brothers, John (Elaine) Vogel, Frank (Nancy) Vogel; five sisters, Mary (LaVerne) Shemka, Evelyn (Roger) Stolicker, Catherine Cleveland, Theresa (Tom) Kahlo, Carol Osborne; one brother-in-law, Jerry Kolar; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Vogel, Jane Vogel and Florence Vogel; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Justin Marshall; four brothers, William, Anthony, Charles and Lawrence Vogel; three sisters, Lucille Kolar, Elizabeth Kubacki, Ann Vogel; in-laws, Ruth Vogel, Eugene Kubacki, Ralph Osborne, William and Phyllis Handley, William and Ellen Bopra, Ronald and Lottie Handley; son-in-law, Gordon McConnachie. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 am Wednesday, January 10 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, St. Isidore Parish in Palms. Rev. Donald Eppenbrock will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be at the Smigielski Funeral Home in Minden City on Tuesday from 2-9 pm and Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Palms from 10-11 am. There will be a rosary recited at 4 pm Tuesday afternoon at the funeral home. Memorials have been requested to the Family Discretionary Fund.
