Mrs. Mary Jane Sweeney, 68, of Ubly passed away Sunday, December 18, 2016 surrounded by her family after a long illness. She was born March 14, 1948, to the late Francis and Opal Hund. Jane was a 1966 graduate of Ubly High School and a 1970 graduate of Central Michigan University. Jane was united in marriage to Kenneth Sweeney on June 20, 1970 at St. John Catholic Church and lived her entire adult life in Ubly. Jane spent thirty-six years as an educator, teaching middle school and high school Special Education and middle school science, at the North Huron middle school and Ubly school districts. She enjoyed directing school plays, showed her competitive side coaching the Ubly Quiz Bowl team and was involved with numerous other academic enrichment programs during her career. Jane was passionate about gardening, tending to her flowers beds. She was a lover of all animals and would never hesitate to care for a stray animal. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, all things Elvis, and discussing her favorite salsa and pickle recipes. Jane was a life long member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ubly where she served for many years as a Eucharistic minister and was a member of the Christian Mothers. Jane is survived by her husband Ken and children, Jennifer Rider and her husband Steve, of Farmington Hills, Jonathan and his wife Elizabeth, of Denver, CO, and Andrew of Ubly, in addition to her grandchildren Madeline and Lucas Rider and Jack, Mark, and Tommy Sweeney. She is also survived by her siblings Ferris (Patricia) Hund of Shelby Twp., Robert (Shirley) Hund of Macomb, Joan (Ron) Bieniek, of Lexington, Janet (Chuck) Erickson of Ft. Myers, FL, James (Mary Ellen) Hund of Gwinn, and sister-in-law Maureen Hund Scully of Wekki Wachee, FL. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Margaret Ann, brother, Mark Hund. Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, December 23 at 11:00 am at Good Shepherd Parish, St. John Church in Ubly. Rev. Charles Hammond, pastor will officiate. Visitation will be at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly on Thursday from 2:00-9:00 pm and Friday at St. John Church from 10:00-11:00 am. There will be a Christian Mothers rosary Thursday afternoon at 4:00 pm and a parish vigil service Thursday evening at 7:00 pm. Both services will be at the funeral home. Memorials have been requested to Sleeper Public Library, Smile Train or the American Cancer Society.
