Mrs. Leona A. Heilig, 85 of Minden City, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living Facility in Bad Axe. She was born on July 26, 1930 in Ruth, MI to the late William and Marie (Peters) Roberts. She married Henry “Hank” T. Heilig on May 18, 1948 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. He preceded her in death on July 21, 2007 after 59 wonderful years of marriage. Leona was a 1947 graduate of Minden City High School. She devoted her entire life to the care of her family and was an outstanding mother, homemaker and businesswoman. Leona and Henry were owners/operators of Heilig Oil and Gas in Minden City for many years. She was lifelong parishioner at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth where she was a member of the Christian Mothers. Leona is survived by children, James (Joan) Heilig of Romeo, Gerald (Maribeth) Heilig of Ubly, Nancy (Dale) Halifax, Mary Lynn (Richard) Lautner, Paul (Marie), Donna (Mark) Klawon, Joan (William) Kolar, all of Minden City, Sheryl (Terrance)Maurer of Ubly, Kurt (Gail) Heilig of Deckerville; 23 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Nash and Eleanor Booms; two sisters-in-law, Marie Roberts and Virginia Roberts; one brother-in-law, Herbert Heilig and his wife, Evelyn. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Benjamin Kramer and Gerald Heilig Jr.; two sisters, Dorothy Schroeder and Evelyn Zmich; two brothers, Louis Roberts and William Roberts; four brothers-in-law, Elmer Schroeder, John Nash, Floyd Booms and Robert Zmich. Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 am Friday, June 10 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church of Holy Apostle Parish in Ruth. Rev. Todd Arnberg, pastor of St. Isidore Parish in Parisville, will officiate. Burial will be in the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Ruth. Visitation will be at the Smigielski Funeral Home on Cass Ave in Minden City on Thursday from 3-8 pm and Friday from 10-11 am at church only. There will be a Sts. Peter & Paul Christian Mothers rosary recited Thursday evening at 7 pm at the funeral home. Leona’s family wants to thank the caregivers and staff at Meadow Lane Assisted Living in Bad Axe and Hometown Health and Hospice for their compassionate and loving care.
