Shirley M. Holdwick

Mrs. Shirley M. Holdwick, 78 of Ruth, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at the Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center in Harbor Beach with her loving family by her side. She was born September 13, 1936 in Sherman Township to the late Bernard & Alma (Tenbusch) Emming. On June 16, 1956, Shirley was united in marriage to Leo H. Holdwick at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. Shirley was a lifelong parishioner at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth where she was a member of the Christian Mothers. She worked side by side with her husband on the family farm. She also worked part time for the Ruth Farmer’s Elevator and the Farmer’s Tavern. Shirley enjoyed bowling, quilting, playing euchre, crocheting and baking her famous chocolate chip cookies. Her cookie containers were never allowed to be empty in anticipation of a grandchild coming to visit. Shirley cherished and dearly loved her family. Shirley is survived by her husband of 58 years, Leo; four children, Evelyn Smaglinski and her husband, Paul of Bad Axe, Melvin Holdwick and his wife, Sue of Ruth, Carl Holdwick and his wife, Lori of Ruth, Mary Jane Woychowski and her husband, John of Harbor Beach; ten grandchildren, Denise Smaglinski, Paul (Trischa) Smaglinski Jr., Emily (Dave) Dupuis, Sarah (Chris) Tyrrell, Mitchell (Ashley) Holdwick, Joshua Holdwick, Carley (Brent) Walker, Caitlyn Holdwick, Chelsea Holdwick, Cassie Holdwick; two great grandchildren, Avarie Dupuis and Hailey Tyrrell; three brothers, Leo (Donna) Emming of Ruth, Leonard (Linda) Emming of Harbor Beach, Marvin (Regina) Emming of Ruth; four sisters, Mary Lou (Damon) Wolczak of Ohio, Marlene (Gary) Geiger of Harbor Beach, Judy Emming of Tennessee, Susan (Terry) Arn of Romulus; five sisters-in-law, Rose Ann Emming of Ruth, Pat Emming of Harbor Beach, Arlene Emming of Harbor Beach, Lenore (Stanley) Kups of Utica, Magdelene Stacer of Ruth; three brothers-in-law, Lawrence Kranz of Harbor Beach, Roman (Clarann) Holdwick of Harbor Beach, Joe (Lorraine) Holdwick of Ruth; many nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her brothers, Melvin, Joe, Raymond, Robert Emming; one sister, Delores Kranz; in-laws, John Holdwick, Clemens Holdwick, Harold & Loretta Stacer, Robert & Irene Holdwick, Merlin Stacer. Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 am Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church of Holy Apostle Parish in Ruth. Fr. Donald Eppenbrock will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly of Friday from 1:30-9:00 pm and Saturday morning from 9:00-10:00 am. There will be a Christian Mothers rosary Friday at 3:00 pm and a parish vigil service at 7:00 pm. Both services will be at the funeral home. Memorials have been requested to the Family Discretionary Fund.
