Mr. Gilbert B. “Gil” Maurer, 76, lifelong resident of Bad Axe, passed way Friday evening, January 10, 2014 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living Facility in Bad Axe. He was born on June 9, 1937 in Ubly, Michigan to the late Bernard A. and Albena (Buchkowski) Maurer. He married Jeanette “Jean” Deachin on August 24, 1979. She preceded him in death on November 7, 1991. Gil graduated from the Maurer Grade School and Ubly High School. He was a member of the Army Reserve from 1955-1963. He worked in Detroit from 1956-1964 at various jobs. Gil was employed as an accountant at Thumb Electric for almost 35 years from 1964 until he retired in July of 1999. Gil was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Church in Bad Axe where he was a member of the Usher’s club. He enjoyed sports, especially softball, bowling and golf. He truly enjoyed doing word searches. Gil is survived by one brother, Kenneth Maurer and his wife, Patricia of Warren; one sister-in-law, Joan Maurer of Ubly; brother-in-law, Robert Deachin and his wife, Jane of Lake Orion, brother-in-law, Carey Deachin and his wife Betty; two aunts, Marie Krozek of Ubly and Matilda Particka of Bad Axe; several nieces and nephews; his loving Meadow Lane family. He was preceded in death by one brother, Clayton Maurer Sr. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 am Tuesday, January 14 at Sacred Heart Church in Bad Axe. Rev. Robert Howe, pastor of St. Hubert Parish, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly on Monday from 2:00-8:00 pm and Tuesday from 10:00-11:00 am at the church only. There will be a parish vigil service Monday evening at 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
